June 2022 Note From the Saddle Bench

Hi Folks!

Hope everyone is enjoying the summer. Guess I owe an apology for the brief note last month. We were busy getting ready for the Western Heritage Classic in Abilene, Tx and time got away from me. We had quite a few complaints. At least now I know someone is reading these. I'm glad a few folks read and seem to enjoy these notes.

Abilene was really good this year. Seems like there were more people than usual. With their new remodel and being more spread out it's sometimes hard to get a read on the attendance. I had a good visit with Billy Klapper. He said he is cranking a few bits and spurs out, just not as many as in the old days. His bits and spurs are probably selling and trading for more than ever before.

Seems like there is a resurgence in interest in the ranching lifestyle. I am not sure why, but I suspect the popularity of the Cowboy Channel, Yellowstone, and 1883 might have something to do with it.

It is still terribly dry and hot in this part of the world, but we have had two or three really good clouds come through and dump on those who were fortunate enough to be under them. I understand in town at Fort Davis they have had over 3" in three rains. Some of the country between Alpine and Fort Davis has had enough to fill up most of the dirt tanks. Most of far west Texas is still powder keg dry. The state firefighters are all over the place just waiting in case something gets started.

The bull elk are growing their antlers back. It will be interesting to see how the deer and elk racks look this fall with it being so dry now. The ongoing drouth has really taken its toll on the mule deer population. Add to that the explosion in aoudad population numbers the last few years and it doesn't look too good for the muleys in the short term. Guess we just need more aoudad hunters.

If you are interested in used tack, we are starting to have quite a bit to sell. All different states of wear and tear as well as quality. We just added about 20 bridles, rawhide taps, chinks, and a bunch of halters. If you are looking for a bargain, give us a call maybe we can fix you up! (800)634-4502

We just had our first adult birthday hat fitting party, complete with refreshments. Everyone had a big time and got rigged up with a new hat for a trip to the ranch. I think the employees had as much fun as the birthday boy. Let us know if we can help you do something special on your trip to the Big Bend area. That's all I know for now!

Adios,
Gary Dunshee
