 Hello from the Big Bend!

Well we are off to Amarillo, Texas on Tuesday for the Working Ranch Cowboys Association (WRCA) Championships. Hope to see you there!

Doesn't seem like much went on this last month. Tom Moorhouse and Ned and Susan Jones came by one day for a visit. Ned worked for the McCoy Ranches in Jeff Davis County for several years. During the fall works one year they were having to ride quite a ways to get to the starting place, so they were leaving the U Ranch headquarters plenty early. While the were still trotting along in a bunch it started to get light. Ned looked down at his mount and said "Damn, this is not my horse." He had roped out one in someone else's string. Of course no one said anything at all the rest of the day. That evening at supper Ned's wife, Susan, came to the cookhouse with a sign around her neck that said "Ned's Wife". She wanted to make sure Ned left with the right bride.

Congratulations to Craig Haythorne on receiving the National Golden Spur Award from the National Ranching Heritage Center. A prestigious award for a well deserving cattleman. Also congratulations to Jimbo Humphreys who was presented the Working Cowboy Award.

The Ranching Heritage Center does a great job of preserving and representing the cattle industry. They are currently putting together a center to preserve and advance the art of spur making, cowboy music, the written word, saddle making, and boot making. When complete, the center will be named to honor Red Steagall who has done so much for the ranching and farming industries over the years.

In case you need help with gift ideas for Christmas, I just want to mention a couple of my favorite picks for this year. The Otter Brand copper and brass knives are really good knives and can be engraved and/or lettered. We can do them for awards or special occasions. They can be personalized with names, initials, or brands. If you are having trouble coming up with the right gift for someone, give me a call and we can come up with some hopefully helpful suggestions.

Hope you and yours have a wonderful Thanksgiving holiday. I think we all have plenty to be thankful for.

Adios for now,

Gary Dunshee
