August 2023 - Note from the Saddle Bench

Hello Everyone! Doesn't seem like it takes but a couple of weeks for another month to pass. The heat wave has finally broken here. It has tried to rain the last two days and has really poured in some spots, it just doesn't cover a lot of country. The far west side of Alpine had 2.5" on Monday but it only sprinkled on the east side of town. I heard of one ranch weaning their calves already. I think most everyone is waiting on the rain though. It was way drier than this last year and didn't start raining until mid August. We grew a really good grass crop. Hope that happens again this year. I haven't seen much of the elk this summer. I bet they are as high up the mountains as they can get to try and keep cool. Tom and Lisa Perrini came by the shop last week. They have Perrini's Steak House in Buffalo Gap near Abilene, Tx. December 2023 - Note From the Saddle Bench

Photo Courtesy of Mattie Sargent Hi Folks! Hope all is well in "su tierra" (your world). Lots of mule deer hunters out here after Thanksgiving. Hope they have some luck. Seems as though the numbers are way down. You just don't see many muleys any more. Drouth, aoudad, and elk are pretty tough competitors for mule deer territory and right now the aoudad are winning. My friend Gary P. Nunn came by the shop on his way to the Terlingua Chili Cookoff in November. Gary P. is a country music legend and has been performing regularly at Terlingua since they started it in the 60's. His Texas music hits include "London Homesick Blues". People have been asking how Big Bend Saddlery wound up being an answer on the TV show "Jeopardy". Well, the answer is: we have no idea. We are glad they did though! July 2023 - Note form the Saddle Bench

The old timers say the 4th starts the rainy season in West Texas, but its running a little behind schedule in Far West Texas this year. We are not in bad shape but I think most everyone is ready for it to rain. I went to the Oklahoma panhandle this last week. From Lubbock, Tx to Balko, Ok is about as wet as it can be. Playa lakes are full everywhere and its as green as a gourd. In the lower places the grass had covered up the fences. All the cattle I saw were full and bedded down by 10:00 in the morning. Beats working all day to make a living. Billy Klapper said it had been a really long time since he had seen it that wet around Pampa, Tx. We are sure happy for those folks. Hope it spreads across the country. I saw Tom Moorehouse in Lubbock on my way back. He was saying that very seldom do ranches get a good rainy season at the same time as a good cattle market, but this year is the exception. Sure would
