June 2024 - Note from the Saddle Bench

 Hi folks,

I hope this note finds you and yours in good health and your country and good shape. It is still extremely dry here in Far West Texas. There have been a few showers around but not much rain associated with it just mostly high winds, hail, and some scattered tornadoes. One incident took out 40 some power poles between Alpine and Fort Stockton. Another one rained so hard, so fast it washed away the asphalt off the highway Between Fort Stockton and Marathon. Later on a tornado hit Sanderson. Fortunately not many injuries, except for one border patrolman being rudely awakened and launched some 200 yards out in the pasture near his house. Don't know, but I imagine that was quite a ride. All the indicators look good for us to have a normal summer though. It normally rains east of us before it can rain here. That has been happening.

All the cactus bloomed this spring in the months they were supposed to bloom in and we had a dry spring. It seems like if we have a wet spring then we have a dry summer so hopefully with all these things in place it'll start raining the Fourth of July. That would be normal but I'm not sure what normal is anymore. Five cattle trucks loaded down with black cows headed east today that's not a good sign. I hope it gets better soon.

We had a big fire here in downtown Alpine. It gutted some of the old buildings that have been there forever. It sure is a loss for our community.

We would like to wish all you fathers out there a happy Father's Day. Even if it's dry we all have a lot to be thankful for.

Adios for now,

Gary Dunshee
