October 2024 - Note From the Saddle Bench

Hi folks,

Hope all is well and your part of the woods. It's been a dry 30 days here in West Texas. Most of the country will be going into winter very dry with not an over abundance of grass. Most people have cut way back on their stock numbers to make the grass last. I saw some pretty grass about 20 miles south of Marfa where they did have some good rains about a month ago. Glad to see someone grew some grass!

I want to congratulate the Sul Ross Rodeo program for putting on a great NIRA rodeo. It was the largest one in history. They have a great bunch of kids this year and we expect good things out of them.

I haven't heard of too many elk being killed yet but one outfitter told me they killed a 384 point bull, a 370, and some 350s. That's some nice bulls.

We would like to congratulate Tio Kleberg on his Golden Spur Award from the National Ranching Heritage Center. We would also like to congratulate Buzz Thorpe on the Golden Spur Award for a working cowboy. He is a fine man indeed, and well deserving of the award.

If you're looking for an excuse to come visit in the Alpine area, the Art Walk pachanga is November. Big Bend Saddlery will be hosting CA artist Wayne Baize, cowboy artist Mike Capron, photographer Jean Cornell, and jewelry maker Randy Glover. Come on by and visit and have some refreshments November 22 and 23.

The WRCA World Championships are just around the corner in Amarillo we always look forward to seeing old friends and making new ones. It is really a great weekend for the agricultural community.

If you like a soft rope, we have a new one for you. It's part nylon, part poly it's really soft but still has some body. It's a four strand that is weighted. Just right for dragging calves!

Don't forget Christmas is coming up and if you need custom orders now is a good time to get started with that.

Hope you have a good month. Adios for now!
