June 2025 - Note from the Saddle Bench

Hi folks!

Well it looks like summer is upon us. We've had good weather here in the Davis Mountains temperature wise, just can't seem to get a good general rain. It's still raining east of us and keeps raining in the same places over and over. I'm happy for the folks that get it, but would sure like to see it spread around a little as well. The big rains they've had has got the Rio Grande running in places. I'm seeing lots of canoes and rafts coming and going down the highway.

The western Heritage Classic in Abilene was really great. I think there were more folks there than I've ever seen. Most people were telling us about the nice rains they've had and how deep the grass was. Combine that with the best cattle prices ever and it was a really good show for us. Carol Richter from Cameron was there on Saturday and he said the day before he saw a three day old Hereford heifer calf sell at the Cameron sale barn for $1100.

I was fortunate enough to be invited on Red Steagall's history tour this year. About 30 guys from all over who really enjoy Ranching history get to go with Red every year on some sort of historical tour. I was talking to James Herring, the CEO of Friona Industries, on the tour. He was telling me that they just sold a pen of fat cattle for over $3000 ahead. I don't think we've ever seen that before. The cattle gurus are claiming these prices are gonna hold for quite a while if for no other reason than based on the sheer lack of numbers.  Hope you get enough rain to keep your cows.

The horse hide belts I talked about are finished and ready to go. If you want a belt that's gonna last a long long time this is probably it. They are 95 bucks and I'll guarantee them for 15 years. See if you can get a deal like that on the pants you run them through.

I went to the Summer Stampede at the Ranching Heritage Center in Lubbock last weekend. Got to see lots of good folks, old friends, and a bunch of craftsmen some of whom I've known awful a long time. Jim Bret Campbell, Robert Tidwell, Katy Rush and the entire crew at the Ranching Heritage Center do a remarkable job at putting the Summer Stampede on. They are currently in full swing raising money for the Red Stegall Western Culture Institute. When this is all done, it will ensure that the crafts of saddle making, bit and spur making, silversmithing, and boot making will live on for future generations. Red gave a great talk about the way of life we enjoy and how this institute will help ensure that doesn't go away.

Hope June treats you all well!

Adios for now!
