July 2025 - Note from the Saddle Bench

Hello everyone,

I hope this note finds everyone in good health and spirits.

Folks are really happy here and Far West Texas since receiving good fairly general rains. The best we've seen in decades. Right before the Fourth of July almost everyone got 5 to 6 inches. Limpia Creek is still running and I suspect a lot of others are too. The grass has turned wrong side out, and you can almost hear it growing. The only trouble is we have a lot less grass than we did 20 years ago. Some of it has died off from lack of moisture. Hopefully we will have a good grass crop from the seeds that have been dormant for so long. The rains came and then it cleared off just in time for the Fourth of July celebrations in Fort Davis and Alpine.

Y'all mark your calendars for the Trappings of Texas Cowboy Gear and Art Show with a little jewelry thrown in for the ladies September 18th, 19th, and 20th at the Museum of the Big Bend on the campus of Sul Ross State University. It is the oldest trapping show in the nation and features world class, saddle makers, bit and spur makers, silversmiths, bootmakers, and hat makers from all over the West. We also have Rawhide braiders from the US and Argentina as well. All of these gear makers are five star world class craftsman. You will see as fine of gear has ever been made at the Trappings which features a Friday night party and sale, a chuckwagon breakfast Saturday morning, and the live auction following breakfast. Hopefully the daytime temperature then will be about 80 something with zero humidity and hopefully the mountains will be lush and beautiful. The Museum has plans for other things to do as well such as guided tours of the current archaeological digs by the University on area ranches. There's a trail ride in the works before the Trappings Show and suburban ranch tours as well.

Hope you can make it!

We have had several people ask in the last few months if we do Saddle repairs. In answer, we have done Saddle repairs since 1905. It is a big portion of our business. We repair saddles for Cowboys and museums alike. Let us know if we can help with any repairs.

Don't forget Viva Big Bend, the Texas music festival coming up this week. It's a really big time in Alpine, Fort Davis, Marfa, Marathon, and Presidio. There's lots of music venues and a really good time. Big Bend Saddlery will serve a chuck wagon breakfast to everyone on Saturday, July 26th. We will have live music from 9 to 11:30 by John Davis, Gene Reeves and Steve Martinez, Craig Carter and Jena Edmunds. Breakfast is free and so is the music. So no excuses for not coming! It will be in the parking lot of Big Bend Saddlery. Hope you can make it.

Big Bend Saddlery customers donated over 500 used nylon lariat ropes that Brewster County Sheriff's deputies delivered to the rescue effort in Kerrville. We are now looking for saddles and tack to help the kids camps that lost all their tack in the recent flooding. If you have anything you want to send, let us know and we'll give you an address to send it to or you can send it to Big Bend Saddlery and we'll get it there.

Our prayers are with those who suffered or had losses in the horrific flooding in the Texas Hill Country. May God bless all the families affected by it.

Adios for now,

Gary Dunshee
