August 2025 - Note from the Saddle Bench

Buckle Made by Gary Dunshee

Hi folks,

Hope all is well in your part of the world. We have had some more scattered showers since last month. Some folks have been fortunate while others have not. We still have a couple of months to grow some grass for those who haven't been rained on yet. It seems like the clouds are following the same trajectory time after time after time

The Viva Big Bend breakfast was really good. We fed over 300 people and had six performers singing that morning. I think everyone had a good time.

It seems like elk season starts earlier every year. I see where they've already harvested some bulls by August 15th. Not sure why they do that. They are still trying to rub the velvet off and their antlers don't look that great, but I'm sure they have their reasons. Their antlers should be outstanding since we had good grass early in the summer while their horns were growing.

So many of the ranches around here have sold all or most of their cows over the last few years and now they have some grass, but prices are so high people are skeptical about buying back in. The guys that know more about the cattle market than I do say that prices are gonna stay high for at least three more years based on the numbers of the cowherd nationally. I hope they're right. It's good to see people who have worked so hard all their lives be rewarded for their efforts.

The Sul Ross rodeo boys continue to knock a home run in the bull riding. Ky Hamilton and Tristan Hutchings are third and fourth in the world right now. Another Sul Ross boy, Gavin Mitchell, is winning a lot this summer as well.

Y'all don't forget the trappings of Texas coming up the 19th and 20th of September at the Museum of the Big Bend on the Sul Ross campus. It should be a great show this year!

The Big Bend Ranch Rodeo was a huge success with standing room only on Saturday night. Congratulations to Cayce Joe Lewis' team who won the rodeo. Rodey Wilson won the top horse. He and his crew are always well mounted and sell some of the finest horses you'll see every year. And congratulations to Kris Hubbard from the Cook Canyon Ranch on being the top hand.

Speaking of ranch rodeos don't forget the upcoming World Championships in Amarillo in November. They have quite a shindig. Hope you can make it.

Adios for now,

Gary Dunshee
