May 2026 - Note from the Saddle Bench

Hi folks,

Hope you're having a good month and you've had some rain. We had about an inch last week. Couldn't hardly tell it now though. It was nice to get that inch and now we're ready for another rain. We bladed up some spreader dams today and the soil moisture didn't go very deep. It is so dry here it's hard to describe it. The red berry juniper are dying again, not that that would be a bad thing, but you just hate to see it dry enough for that to happen.

It has rained east of us. I went to San Antonio a couple of weeks ago and from Ozona on it looked pretty darn good. I hope the climatologists are right with their predictions that we are going to have El Niño in place this summer.  Sure would be a change.

Hope you can make it to the Western Heritage classic in Abilene this coming weekend. It's always one of the best shows we go to. Lots to do see and buy for everyone in the family and a great ranch rodeo. One of the best trade shows in the west especially if you like old bits and Spurs, Chuck wagon cookoff, and a dance every night. Hope to see you there.

They are still killing a few Aoudad, but the warmer it gets the sooner it will be over. I heard someone got a 36 1/2 inch one the other day. That's a big old ram.

After we get back from Abilene, we will leave pretty soon going to Sheridan, Wyoming to the Rocky Mountain Leather show. We will get to see everything new in the Leather industry, new tools, different kinds of Leather sewing machines. If it pertains to Leather, they will have it there. They usually have a saddle maker contest and a leather carving contest as well. The last time we went several years ago a lot of Japanese folks had entries in the leather carving class. Those folks are really good they took carving to the next level. Hope it is as good this year as the last time we went.

Here's hoping you get some timely rains this summer and your calves really mash the scales this fall.

Adios for now,

Gary Dunshee
