July 2025 - Note from the Saddle Bench

Photo Courtesy of Mattie Sargent Hello everyone, I hope this note finds everyone in good health and spirits. Folks are really happy here and Far West Texas since receiving good fairly general rains. The best we've seen in decades. Right before the Fourth of July almost everyone got 5 to 6 inches. Limpia Creek is still running and I suspect a lot of others are too. The grass has turned wrong side out, and you can almost hear it growing. The only trouble is we have a lot less grass than we did 20 years ago. Some of it has died off from lack of moisture. Hopefully we will have a good grass crop from the seeds that have been dormant for so long. The rains came and then it cleared off just in time for the Fourth of July celebrations in Fort Davis and Alpine. Y'all mark your calendars for the Trappings of Texas Cowboy Gear and Art Show with a little jewelry thrown in for the ladies September 18th, 19th, and 20th at the Museum of the Big Bend on the campus of Sul Ross State University...

August 2025 - Note from the Saddle Bench

Buckle Made by Gary Dunshee Hi folks, Hope all is well in your part of the world. We have had some more scattered showers since last month. Some folks have been fortunate while others have not. We still have a couple of months to grow some grass for those who haven't been rained on yet. It seems like the clouds are following the same trajectory time after time after time The Viva Big Bend breakfast was really good. We fed over 300 people and had six performers singing that morning. I think everyone had a good time. It seems like elk season starts earlier every year. I see where they've already harvested some bulls by August 15th. Not sure why they do that. They are still trying to rub the velvet off and their antlers don't look that great, but I'm sure they have their reasons. Their antlers should be outstanding since we had good grass early in the summer while their horns were growing. So many of the ranches around here have sold all or most of their cows over the las...

There have been some big thunderheads that put out a lot of rain east and north of Fort Stockton. I have talked to a lot of people from North Texas that have received really good rains. Seems like a lot of the state has been blessed with good rains. Hope it continues 'til everyone gets what they need. Don't forget the Western Heritage Classic coming up this weekend. It's always a good time. Get to see a lot of good people and a lot of good gear. The elk are just about through shedding their horns I try to keep a big bale of alfalfa out for the elk when it's extremely dry and usually a dozen or so will take me up on it. It has been so dry that I've counted as many as 39 at a time eating hay. We are taking some new wider belts to Abilene. They are one and three-quarter inches wide tapered to one and a hal...
